Food Is Not Your Friend

Food is not your friend. Stop saying it is. Stop saying that you eat to be comforted by a dependable friend. Food is not, I repeat, not your friend.

Food is fuel for your physical body. Food can taste delicious. Food can satisfy physical hunger. Food is a reason to get together with friends, but food is not one of the friends.

Here is a definition of friend:

Friendship is a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more humans. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, and affection. Friends will welcome each other's company and exhibit loyalty towards each other, often to the point of altruism. Their tastes will usually be similar and may converge, and they will share enjoyable activities. They will also engage in mutually helping behavior, such as exchange of advice and the sharing of hardship. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviors. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them. Value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating on a consistent basis:

the tendency to desire what is best for the other, sympathy and empathy, honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one's counterpart, mutual understanding.

So let's play this out to make the point. How much does food know you? How much affection does it have for you? How much does it welcome your company? Does it have the same tastes as you do? Does food engage in mutually helping behavior? Does it give you advice? Can you trust food not to harm you? Do you have food's best interests at heart? Do you empathize with your food and does it do the same for you? Are you honest with food? Do you tell your food the truth? Does it tell you the truth? Does it understand you?

Oh, and here is my favorite question: Does food really comfort you? Seriously..

Food just is. It doesn't love you. It doesn't hate you. It doesn't care if you eat it or don't eat it. It doesn't care if you are sad. It doesn't care if you are happy. Food doesn't give one damn about you. Food doesn't taste good on purpose so you will be happy. Food doesn't try to be dependable so you can rely on it. Food doesn't care if you like it and FOOD DOES NOT WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND.

So some of you might say that you feel better after you eat something that tastes good. But is that really true? Think about it. How do you really feel afterward? Ok, so you might say that you feel better when you are actually eating it. I will give you that even though I am not convinced that it is true either. But while you are eating food, the reason you feel better for a very miniscule amount of time is because you are focused on the food tasting good and not your thoughts. Your negative thoughts are what make you feel negative emotion. And maybe for that one-minute you are eating a cookie, you are distracted from your thinking, and focused on the taste of the food. You just gave yourself a state change by changing your focus. You didn't make a new friend.

If you need a friend, be your own. Read the definition above and see what kind of friend you are being to yourself. See how much you are paying attention to treating yourself well. Maybe you think food is a good friend because you are a terrible friend to yourself. Maybe if you put a little effort into being kind and warm and trusting and understanding and honest to yourself, you could beat out the Doritos and the Weight Watcher crackers in the "good friend" category.

Food is not your friend. You are.

The Food And Drink Of James Bond

Among the big differences between the 007 books and the films are that while 007 is hardly seen to eat in the movies - he is well known for downing booze though - Ian Fleming's novels often include exquisitely described meals that are a highlight of Ian Fleming's prose.

Even so, Bond isn't an out and out snob, and even though he does enjoy good food served in fancy restaurants, his favourite meal undoubtedly is scrambled eggs on toast with bacon. This he is able to eat morning, noon and night and Fleming went as far as featuring a recipe for scrambled eggs within his short story, 007 in New York.

Bond also finds fine dining sometimes rather pretentious and Fleming claims that whenever in England he exists on a diet of grilled sole, oeufs cocotte and cold roast beef with potato salad; Bond himself claims to prefer the ordinary plain food of the country when abroad.

Bond's favourite meal during the day is breakfast, which we realize because Ian Fleming told us. It was also Fleming's own favourite meal time - his view that people yearned for uncomplicated, childish foods and breakfast provided exactly that.

While Bond sometimes does order scrambled eggs in the morning in the novels, his routine while in London is rather simpler; he drinks two cups of coffee from De Bry in New Oxford Street (sadly it doesn't exist any more) brewed with a glass Chemex coffee maker while reading the Times.

He is then served an egg that has been boiled for exactly three and a third minutes by May, his elderly Scottish maid, that is served in a dark blue egg cup ornamented with a golden band round the top. The egg comes from French Marans hens and is supplied by an acquaintance of May. After the egg, he eats toast and butter served along with Tiptree's Little Scarlet strawberry jam, Norwegian Heather Honey from Fortnum and Mason and Cooper's Vintage Oxford marmalade - all is served on blue Minton china.

Nonetheless, when in foreign lands his breakfast can vary. In New York he calls room service to order orange juice, three lightly scrambled eggs with bacon, toast and marmalade and a double espresso with cream, which hardly differs from his home breakfast. But when on assignment in Istanbul he orders a much distinct breakfast; yoghurt and green figs with Turkish coffee.

Where we do see evidence of 007 enjoying the "plain food of the country" when he lunches on ham sandwiches with plenty of mustard (in an English pub) or bread and sausage (when tailing Goldfinger through France), he also eats exceptionally well.

Certainly one of the most unforgettable descriptions of a meal happens when he dines with M at his private members club, Blades. Following vodka coming from Riga, Bond requests Champagne to go with his asparagus and hollandaise sauce, lamb cutlets with buttered peas and new potatoes, plus a slice of pineapple for dessert. This episode features in Moonraker, published shortly after rationing had ended in the uk and while it may not appear to be especially spectacular to contemporary readers, the books provided wish fulfilment for the audience of the day.

Analysis Of Indian Food Sector

Which are the key factors that are helping the growth in the market?
Food ingredients refer to a broad category of ingredients that are added to food to improve the appearance, quality or nutritional value of food and beverages. Key uses of food ingredients include facilitate processing, maintain product consistency, extend shelf life, ensure microbiological safety, improve or maintain nutritional value, or enhance the flavor, color and texture of the finished product. Demand for food ingredients has been rising over the years on account of rising wealth, evolving consumer habits, rising packaged goods penetration and global population growth. The flavors segment has the largest share in the overall food ingredients market followed by hydrocolloids, sweeteners, emulsifiers, preservatives, colors and food cultures. In the flavor segment, beverages account for a major share followed by dairy products, bakery products and savory & convenience foods. In the sweetener category, low calorie sweeteners are gaining importance as they do not produce acids by oral bacteria, and therefore prevent dental carries.
Diabetic and obese people also prefer low calorie sweeteners as it provides them the same sweet taste of sugar without side-effects. Usage of colorants is highest in soft drinks, confectionery and meat & savory products. There has been a shift towards natural colors as more and more consumers associate natural products with superior quality. The rapid population growth and changing consumer preferences resulting from various factors such as increasing personal income, leisure time, health concerns and urbanization, has lead to an overall rise in the demand of food ingredients.
What are the key challenges faced by the Food Ingredients industry?
The Indian food ingredient industry has a big scope for growth, since India is an agro-based country and has a huge base for raw materials required for this industry. However, a recent report prepared by Frost and Sullivan, in association with CIFTI (Confederation of Food Trade Industry), the food wing of industry chamber FICCI has come up with a few strategic recommendations for this industry to address the challenges faced by this industry.

How can the government support the Food Ingredients industry?
India"s processed food industry is undergoing major developments as a result of government endorsement schemes and capital investments. Food ingredients (Fi) India trade exhibition takes place in Mumbai, which addresses the latest industry issues and will see the future investment into the country. With an average of 6.3% annual economic growth and expending middle-class, now over 300 million, India is one of the world"s leading markets.

These factors have driven government investment in the processed food industry, with the goal of providing better nutrition to India"s large population and improving further living standards.

"The Indian food and beverage market is expanding rapidly and is expected to touch US$ 330 billion by 2013. The Government of India is envisaging substantial investment in the food processing industry over the next five years.

Glycemic Index Food List, Chart - Information That You Should Know

When glucose or sugar collects in blood stream, the condition is referred to as glycemia. Glycemia may be a pre-diabetic state, and not necessarily diabetes mellitus. If a person is diagnosed with glycemia, his or her blood glucose level may be slightly higher than the upper limit of normal blood glucose reading. He may not be called a diabetic in this case. Two main reasons of glycemia are poor production of insulin and non-reactivity of body cells to insulin. Stress and anxiety, infections, illness, forgetting insulin injections or oral glucose lowering pills, faulty food habits, lack of physical activity and exercises may induce glycemia in a person. Glycemia can be of two types: hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is characterized by high levels of glucose in blood. If the fasting glucose count exceeds 90-130mg/dl, it is called fasting hyperglycemia, and if the postprandial or after-meal reading exceeds 180mg/dl, it is called postprandial hyperglycemia. The common symptoms of hyperglycemia include headaches, increased thirst, increased hunger, frequent urination, decreased vision, blurred vision, weight loss, fatigue, intestinal disorders, and skin infections, slow healing of wounds, numbness in limbs, nausea and vomiting.

Hypoglycemia occurs when glucose levels in blood are very low. The readings, in case of hypoglycemia, may be below 70mg/dl. The main causes of hypoglycemia include overdoses of insulin or diabetic pills, intake of beta-blockers, exhaustive dieting or skipping of meals, intake of alcohol, severe infections, renal failure, liver failure, formation of tumors caused by insulin or insulinoma, congenital conditions resulting in increased production of insulin. The symptoms of hypoglycemia include trembling, sweating, palpitations, hunger, clammy skin, irritability and anxiety.

Glycemic Index Food List and Chart

The concept of glycemic index was propounded by Dr David J. Jenkins at the University of Toronto in the year 1980-81. It is actually a way to yard or measure the impact of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates are said to have a high glycemic index if they break down quickly in to glucose during digestion. Those with low glycemic index break down slowly and release glucose in to the bloodstream more gradually. Low glycemic index is indicative of a slow rate of digestion and food absorption and also low demand of insulin. In other words, glycemic index of a food item would help us understand which food would cause our blood glucose level to soar high and in a faster rate. For instance, intake of food with the GI 100 or 95 would allow glucose levels to rise considerably, and those with GI 20 or 25 would not cause much rise in blood glucose. Thus glycemic index has nothing to do with the quantity of food consumed but its quality. The glycemic list of some food items is as follows.

Fructose-12-25, average-19, Glucose-85-111, average-100, Glucose consumed with 20 grams of fiber-57-85, Glucose consumed with protein and fat-56, Honey-32-87, average-55, Lactose-46, Sucrose-58-65 and average-68.

Body Detox Diet Tips Beating The Food Demons

A three week detox diet is not a long time to abstain from alcohol, saturated fats, sugars, cakes and chocolates. I don't deny that you may have moments of weakness, but I will show you how to cope with those. The essential point is to make a three-week commitment to adjusting your dietary intake so as to avoid potentially addictive foods.

We are not addicted to lettuce or celery or foods that are good for us but, unfortunately, we do become addicted to foods that are toxic and potentially dangerous. A detox diet sets out the way for you to retrain your body to overcome these addictions. This is not a journey of self-sacrifice and pain. We are going to work together, devoting three weeks to the job. I am not saying that you will never be able to eat pizza and cakes or drink wine ever again, but that a three week detox program will set you on a course that will prepare you for the next stage - the maintenance program - where a greater variety of foods will be reintroduced into your diet.

This maintenance program will help you to deal with the effects of eating a slice of pizza, a slice of cake or drinking a glass of wine without feeling guilty and without it having a detrimental effect on your system.

A 21-day holistic detox reconditions your body so that you can eat the occasional 'naughty' without causing problems. The odd pizza or cake can easily be digested and eliminated without causing stagnation or weight gain. It is not going to clutter up your colon or congeal and adhere to your digestive tract - unless you overdo it, of course.

Fresh Food Is Best

A healthy detox diet will rid your system of the toxins and poisons that it has accumulated over many years. I don't just mean the internal build up of waste matter that is ingested with food, but also the effects of environmental pollution on the body. To this end, you need to be thinking about the nutrient value of the food you are actually putting in your mouth. Too many of us rely on supermarket convenience foods that have little nutritional value and are packaged in plastics that are themselves full of toxins and chemicals.

Intensive farming, nowadays a widespread practice, also poses food problems. It often involves the use of artificial and chemical stimulants, and/or genetic engineering, and while this may result in vast quantities of food being produced more quickly, there is a greater likelihood of that food being devoid of nutritional value and producing a build up of toxins in the body. Furthermore, the fruit, vegetables, chicken etc. that you see on the shelves may have crossed continents and oceans before reaching the store. They are, therefore, not fresh and their nutrient levels are that much lower.

I want to encourage you to eat, as far as possible, freshly prepared meals from food that is either in season and grown locally (which means the vitamin and mineral content will be considerably higher) or food that is grown as organically as possible. However, don't be mistaken by thinking that 'organic' necessarily means 'pure and toxin-free'. The situation is more complex than that.

Organic And Biodynamic

Although vegetables may be grown organically and locally, this does not mean that the farmer has total control over the quality of his animal manure or organic fertilizer. For example, the water consumed by cows in the streams and rivers may be full of heavy metals and other toxins produced by chemical factories. Toxic animal manure may then be used as an organic fertilizer for organic foods. In the UK, the Soil Association monitors organic food using very strict guidelines but the same is not always true for organic associations in other countries. This is why it is essential to wash everything, even organic produce, before eating it.

Biodynamic produce, which is increasing in popularity, is better because it is grown and fed using a holistic system: all the meats, fruits and vegetables produced are a product of the farm itself with no outside additives, manures or pesticides. There are several farms, spread around the country, that have retail outlets on site, and some supermarkets stock produce grown by biodynamic methods.

How to Cook Healthy Food Using Simple Recipes

Do you cook most of your own meals, or do you find yourself picking up takeout most of the time? If you, like many people, find yourself heading to the same few takeout places night after night, what is the reason? For some people, it might very well be that they like the food better than their own creations, but for many people it's the convenience factor. Many people will tell you that they don't cook for themselves because it's too complicated and time consuming. Well if you are getting sick of the world of takeout, it might be time to start looking for some nutritious, simple recipes that you can fall back on when you don't have a lot of time or ingredients on your hands. You'll be surprised by how simple cooking can really be.

It is important to remember that cooking your own meals doesn't mean you're obligated to make yourself a huge, seven-course meal with all of the trimmings every single night. You can find simple recipes for many of your favorite dishes. Many people virtually live off of fast food burgers, but there are so many simple recipes for burgers available! With hamburger patties, it might be a good idea to make them in advance and freeze them, but even then you can still use these recipes. A little ground beef, a package of onion soup mix, an egg, and some cracker crumbs are all you need to make delicious, mouth-watering burgers that have way more flavor and substance than the fast food variety. Make the patties on a Sunday afternoon - it will really only take twenty or thirty minutes at most - layer them between wax paper, and freeze them in a freezer bag. When you get home from work, simply throw them on the grill or in a frying pan, and you have a fast, easy dinner.

Another great simple recipe is easy tomato bisque. Mix a can of tomato soup with a quarter cup of soft cream cheese, and mix in some basil, finely chopped onion, or any other seasoning, that you like. Some cream cheese brands make cream cheese with herbs already mixed in, so that makes it even easier! Food Storage Ideas That Save Money

Reducing living expenses and saving money is a top priority for many people when the economy is bleak and future job stability is uncertain. While there are some obvious monthly expenditures that can be cut, such as gym memberships, expensive cable and satellite T.V packages, cell phone plans, etc., there are other less obvious things a person can do that can add up to substantial savings as well.

One way a person can save is by handling and storing food in a way that reduces food spoilage. Less food going to waste means more food you will eat, and therefore less money you will spend on food in the long run. This article lists four (4) food storage ideas that can save you money.

1. Reuse the plastic produce bags. The plastic produce bags that you put your fruit and vegetables in at the grocery store can be reused to put your sandwiches in. Reusing the bags is good for the environment and good for your pocket book since you will save money by not having to buy as many sandwich bags.

2. Organize your pantry or cupboards into separate areas for different kinds of food. For instance, you may devote one shelf for cereal, another shelf or two for canned goods, designate another area for staples such as flower, sugar, rice, and beans etc. Having a place for everything, and everything in its place will make it easier for you to find what you need when you need it. You will be less likely to allow food to go to waste because you forget about it or can't see it tucked out of sight in some corner. By knowing what is in your pantry, it's also less likely that you will buy things you don't need at the grocery store.

3. Here's a great way to store milk when you have more in your refrigerator than you'll be able to use before it goes bad(for instance you go out of town for several days). Freeze the milk in a plastic carton to keep it from going to waste. When you're ready to use it, just take it out of the freezer and let it be frost in the fridge.

4. Here is a way to keep your fresh lettuce from getting oxidized and turning brown. When you bring your lettuce home from the grocery store, break up the head or separate the lettuce leaves and wash in cold water. Wrap the lettuce leaves in clean wet paper towels. Put them in your refrigerator crisper where it will stay fresh and crisp for several weeks.

In conclusion, we have looked at four money-saving food storage ideas. By reusing plastic bags, organizing the pantry and cupboards, freezing milk, and keeping lettuce fresh for longer you will save some money and even make you life a bit easier. As they say, a penny saved is a penny earned, and learning how to save a little here and a little there adds up over time.

What To Know About Food Miles And In What Way Do They Disturb The Ecosystem

One of the oft overlooked aspects of organic food and the degree to which it lessens environmental impact has to do with food miles. What are "food miles," you may wonder as I did. Food miles are exactly what they sound like: the number of miles food must travel in its journey from the fields it is grown in until it reaches its final destination on the consumer's plate. While organic food is better both for you and for the environment, food miles are something that most people fail to consider.

Food Miles and the Environment
The benefit to the earth afforded by natural, sustainable farming practices, including the dramatic reduction of chemicals introduced into the ground, water and air, are undoubtedly significant. You'll never hear me speak badly about any farmer who opts for an organic foundation to his or her business, because every little bit is important to the whole. However, food miles are definitely a consideration whether you're farming organic or not.

Food miles have to do with the energy costs associated with transporting food: most of the time the petroleum-based nonrenewable resources that our society depends on are used for this. This directly relates to the amount of carbon emissions (or carbon footprint) associated with the production of a food - carbon emissions directly contribute to global warming and are hugely detrimental from an environmental standpoint.

Local Agriculture
The fact is, not all organic farmers have a local market that they can sell their products to and so organic produce, meats and dairy are widely transported just like their nonorganic counterparts. Consider two things:

- the amount of single ingredient organic goods, such as produce, meats, dairy and eggs offered in all your various grocery retailers who carry organics (and many chains now do,) and whether or not it is feasible for that amount of food to be consistently supplied by the local agriculture industry;

- the many additional multi-ingredient organic products whose components range anywhere from 70 - 100% organic

Somebody is stocking all of these Wal-Marts, Krogers, Publixes and similar stores with their organic foods. Whenever possible, I'd hope that these stores would turn to local suppliers to meet their needs, however it is unlikely that this alone is enough to stock each of their organic aisles. Additional, all of the multi-ingredient organic products like peanut butter, soup, cheese and the like all must have raw, organic ingredients transported to their places of processing, after which the finished product is then shipped to the shelves of supermarkets located country-wide.

Organic Food Miles are Still Food Miles
Organic food is transported like all other food, and accumulates its own fair share of food miles that play a part in the condition of the environment and global pollution. While it's directly beneficial to your health to eat only organic foods, as far as environmental impact goes it's still not enough. The solution here is to make an effort to buy locally grown organics whenever possible to limit the creation of needless food miles.

I've written another article which describes the many easy, accessible options for people seeking to support local growers, entitled "Make a Difference - Support Local Food Industries." For those interested, it contains lots of useful information on the subject and suggestions for the most immediate sources of locally grown food people have available to them. While I commend you for your commitment to support organics and the freshest, most natural food possible, there are more steps that need to be taken in order to ensure a healthier, sustainable and beautiful earth for us all.

This article is part of an ongoing series entitled "Transitioning to Organic" that provides tips, information and easy ways to adopt some or all organic food into your lifestyle.

The Most Popular Gourmet Food For Dinner Parties

Gourmet Food is classy and elegant cuisine that is great for dinner parties and entertaining guests. It is rich in flavor, delicious, and provides a beautiful aesthetic. In addition, gourmet food baskets are an excellent choice for gifts to family and friends. There are numerous types of gourmet foods ranging from simple cheese and crackers to smoked meats and smoked salmon. Deciding on the perfect gourmet food depends largely on your palate as well as the desired presentation.

With its smoky and buttery taste, smoked salmon is always a favorite and tastes wonderful in any variation. The Norwegian Smoked Salmon is for those who wish for a strong, smoky and intense flavor. Produced by the Norwegians, generously trimmed portions of salmon are hand-cured with a mixture of sugar and salt and slowly smoked. The result is a filet of velvet-smooth texture, a smoky and subtly salty flavor, and a beautiful peach color. For those with the most discerning palates, the Balyk Cut is the most exclusive and desired salmon filet.

Furthermore, The Hot Smoked Norwegian Salmon is not only intense, but also provides a very rich and flaky texture that melts in your mouth. The Hot Smoked Salmon can be served as a main dish or an appetizer and is very different from its chilled counterpart. Due to its hearty nature, this salmon is much thicker and much more filling that the Norwegian Smoked Salmon.

In contrast, the Scottish Smoked Salmon is tender, delicate and smooth. Categorized as the most popular salmon in the world, the Scottish Smoked filet is less smoky and more subtle than the Norwegian cuts. Characterized by its orange-pink color and delicate flesh, the Scottish Salmon can be reserved for some of your finest entertaining.

Postnatal 'confinement' Food Part 2

Everybody will ask you to eat only ' heaty' food and avoid cold or cooling food as your body is cold after childbirth. This applies to the 3 main races in Malaysia but sometimes, what is considered 'heaty' may be 'cooling' for another which increases our dilemma. The best option is to try out the food as far as your culture and religion advices and learn to substitute the ingredients wherever possible to suit your taste. I am afraid that my culinary expertise is limited to Chinese and Western food so I can only talk about this type of food at this moment in time.

Traditional Chinese confinement food consists mainly of old ginger, rice wine, sesame oil, black vinegar, some warming alcohol, lots of meat especially kampong chicken and lean pork, white fish such as white pomfret and some vegetables.

Apparently, you are supposed to eat 30 chickens, 12 bottles of rice wine and 15 kilos of old ginger root during this period. Whether you can achieve this target is up to you but I find that most women nowadays cannot manage it. On average, if you do practice what is recommended, the cost could easily be about RM 1000.00 ++ just for the food only.

Food to avoid during the first week only
Ginger - Delays healing of wounds and increase risk of jaundice in baby. Substitute with peppercorn or garlic.
Fish - Causes foul smelling lochia or discharge.

Alcohols which are recommended for consumption during the confinement month are: Brandy, Yomeishu, rice wine and Guinness Malta because they are yang'. If you are a non-drinker, this sudden consumption may cause alcohol rash, redness in the face and heart palpitations, so do take it easy. Alcohol does go to the baby through breast milk, so if you want a good night's sleep, drink the alcohol after your dinner. The content of alcohol is reduced during cooking therefore you might consider adding it to your food during cooking instead of drinking it neat. Guinness Malta is non alcoholic and has high iron content therefore is suitable if you are anaemic. Pulut rice is rich in iron therefore is used to make rice wine for postnatal nursing mothers. The rice is low in fat and free of cholesterol with high dietary fibre to reduce risk of heart attack and diabetes. It is better known as Shaoxing wine.

Drinks
It is believed that iced or cold drinks may cause severe shock to the system and further weaken the cold' body therefore it is strongly recommended that boiled warm teas are consumed throughout the day as they are supposed to help heat up the womb. For those who do not believe in these teas you may try drinking Chamomile tea which is beneficial for the baby as well, because it helps to reduce wind

Soups
Soup is a nutritious replacement for water. You can use any meat for stock. The meat supplies fat that is essential for extraction of fat soluble nutrients. Drinking soup about 1 hour before breastfeeding may help to increase milk flow. Chinese soups are usually clear and easier to drink compared to creamy western soups and it is less fattening.

Below are some food ingredients that you might want to add to your diet during the postnatal confinement' month.

Boxthorn fruit or Chinese wolfberry is best known to correct poor eyesight and eye strain. Used in conjunction with other herbs it is effective for improving energy and strength

Chinese angelica root or dong kwai is supposed to nourish the female organs, alleviate menstrual pain and prevent haemorrhage.

Chinese yam (wai san) used in conjunction with meat and other herbs aids digestion, regulate sugar level and control inflammation of the uterus. The dried variety must be soaked for at least 15 minutes before use to remove the powder

Solomon's seal (yok chuk) is used to alleviate many ailments especially those affecting the throat and lungs

Sesame oil, besides being rich in Vitamin E, Iron & Calcium, helps heal the womb and rid it of "dirty residual blood".

Chestnuts invigorate vital energy. Resolves fatigue depression and irritability. High in phosphorous, selenium and calcium

Black vinegar is made from glutinous rice and lowers ph of food. It leaches calcium from bones cooked with it, therefore it is used to prepare high calcium food especially for breast feeding mothers and it also relieves a windy abdomen.

Dill has antibacterial and antispasmodic properties. It is a warming herb which aids digestion, gets rid of gas, encourages lactation, freshens the breath and soothes colic. It is the main ingredient in Gripe water.

Almonds and walnuts contain leucine and isoleucine which are amino acids that regulates growth, blood sugar and wound healing.

Malay confinement food is the same as normal but with a lot of jamu which is basically natural herbal remedies used internally and externally for health and beauty. Make sure the products are registered with the Ministry of Health and that they are locally produced

Kani seeds contain antioxidants to promote youthfulness, tighten vaginal muscles, prevents excessive discharge, odour and itchiness. It firms the breasts and promotes healing of the reproductive system after childbirth.

Gallanggal is a member of the ginger family and it functions as an antibiotic. It warms the body, cleanses the blood, improves appetite, reduces wind and energises the muscles.

Pegaga leaves increases energy, helps ease sleeping problems, improves blood circulation.

Turmeric functions as an antibiotic and promotes a healthy circulatory system.

Drumstick leaves are rich in proteins, vitamin C and A, beta-carotene, iron, calcium, potassium and other minerals. Because of their nutrients and ability to encourage milk flow, they are a valuable food for survival in impoverished countries.

The most important thing to remember is that you must be comfortable with what you eat. Do not force yourself to eat something that you do not like or will cause problems later. Although you are in confinement' you are not a prisoner per se.

Food Pyramid And Its Classification

Are you finding yourself in need of dropping a few pounds, doing something to pick up a little more energy? If you are a person who tends to eat a lot of fast foods from restaurants, or you eat a lot of prepared foods while you are at home, chances are this is the cause for your fatigue and those extra pounds. There are ways to help both of those issues without going on a horrible diet that makes you feel like you are killing yourself. You do not need to work out at a gym till you cannot move.

The food pyramid tells you that there are five major food groups, and it tells you how many servings you should have from each food group each day. If you find yourself eating these recommended foods and snacks, the health benefits will be amazing.Fruits and vegetables are two of the food groups. Between the two groups, you should consume 11 items each day. You are probably saying wow, I can never eat that much fruit or vegetables. But if you start being creative, it will be very easy to consume.

So how does the Italian food pyramid differ? The Italian food pyramid basically concentrates on more of the foods that make up the Mediterranean diet. There is much more of an emphasis on eating foods that have a plant origin. Not only are fruits and vegetables eaten a lot more by the Italians and Mediterranean's, but they also eat many more grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, olives, and olive oil. This is always going to make for good healthy food, packed with vitamins and minerals. There is also much more emphasis on eating fish and shellfish at least twice a week.

The bottom section of the Japanese food pyramid includes all the grains that are available. It is exactly the same as the USDA version in the sense that you can eat 6 to 11 servings a day. Then there are two sections detailing the amount of fruits and vegetables that you can eat. The Japanese food pyramid has one section for vegetables which allows you to eat between 3 and 5 seconds per day and a section for fruits which allows between 2 and 4 servings per day. Going up one level there is two more sections, one section for dairy products and the other section for meat. The meat section also includes fish, crab, squid, and even bean curd. The final section, the top section of the Japanese food-pyramid, includes all the foods which are only to be used sparingly. This section is for fats, oils, and sweets.

And hey! With this diabetes diet chart you can have a party on fruits, veggies and grain foods. This food grouping, is right at the bottom of they diabetic food pyramid and actually help you fight the disease because with high fiber fruit and veggies they help the bodies natural work in breaking down glucose. 3 or more serves a day will work well for you.Concerning the vegetables and grains these are natures gift to the diabetic and up to 5 serves a day in good portions provide great fiber content for the body to break down that glucose that threatens to send you into the dreaded diabetic coma.

Classification

The others are Alanine, Asparagine, Aspartate, Glutamate, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline, and Serine. These are formed from amphibolic intermediates by short anabolic pathways, or from other dietary amino acids.Proteins form different sources vary considerably in the quality and quantity of their amino acid contents, and thus their food values differ. The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. While proteins contain substances in addition to amino acids, their biologic properties are determined largely by the kinds of amino acids, present, the order in which they are linked together, and thereby the spatial relationship of one amino acid to another.

Some determinants of GI (Glycemic Index) are listed below;

i) Processing:- The more finely ground grain is rapidly digested due to increased surface area hence a higher GI. Processing tends to remove the fibre rich outer bran. It also removes the vitamins and mineral rich inner germ, basically stripping the food all its nutrients except carbs.

ii) Fiber-content: - The bran for example shields the food from immediate rapid action by enzymes. This slows the enzymes effectiveness in releasing the sugar molecules into the blood stream.

iii) Ripeness: - The more ripe a fruit or vegetable the more the sugar it has hence a higher G.I.

iv) Structure of the starch: - Occurring in many structural forms, the more a starch isomer is branched the less easily is broken down. For example a potato is more easily broken down because its starch is only a long chain. This makes it a high G.I. food.

v)Fats and acid content :- The more fat and acid a food contains the slower its carbohydrates are turned into sugar.

Top 3 Most Popular Indian Street Food Items

India is a country with a very diverse culture. The geographical regions, climate, religions, languages and customs all have great effects on the countrys various cuisines. Every region has their own speciality selections and some of the food is cooked occasionally only at homes while others are sold every day on the streets. When travelling through the country you can find a wide variety of street food which is a unique thing about India that Ive hardly seen anywhere else in the world. They say the cuisine changes ever 100 kilometres and is an expression of the local landscape and history. If you move to the north part of the country you can relish chaat,samosa,jhaal-moodhi, etc. and towards the South India the street food is idlis, vadas, dosa etc.

You can find street food across India. Even tiny towns and hamlets have their own specialities which they are often known for. Bigger cities like the metros Bombay, Delhi, Kolkata and Banglore have a larger spread of street food as these cities have people that migrated from other regions as well in search of better jobs and education.

Eating in restaurants can be an expensive affair therefore most wage workers and even others cannot afford eating out very often and hence the street food option which is much cheaper are popular.

What sets India apart is that the street foods have a personality of their own. Its not only cheap comfort food. Its a whole cuisine in iteself. Interestingly, many culiniary inventions and trends happen at the street level in India. Indo-Chinese food which is a blend of Indian and Chinese cuisines, really took off on the streets. When a certain street item becomes very popular, bigger restaurants then take it up and include it in their menus or even open entire restaurant chains that sell just that street food item, but now packaged and sold in a better location, more suitable for those that dont want to engage with the often less hygienic environs of street food stalls. Vada Pavs and Pav Bhaji in Mumbai are too prime examples of this trend and so is Indo-chinese food.

Pani is flavourful water and is prepared adding extract of tamarind along with mint and coriander leaves and even some black salt is added to the water. Depending on the level of spice you can digest, the pani is accordingly made sweet or hot. Tips to Stop Food Cravings and Help You With Your Diet

Most of us are "regular" people. We don't eat the perfect diet
all the time and have our struggles with food, same as everyone
else. But having an awareness of this fact and knowing a little
bit about our health and food nutrition can help when it comes to
making wise decisions.

Many people struggle with food "cravings." Studies tell us that
it's fairly common for food cravings to happen at certain times,
quite often at around bedtime. Your guard may be down, you may
have had an unusually hard day, and off you go on your
not-so-merry way to find that tasty treat. Fatigue and stress
often combine to take their toll on the best of intentions.

When food cravings are unconstrained, what starts out as a
bedtime snack quickly turns into a full blown feeding
frenzy...not something most of us fully understand or appreciate.
We head to kitchen and every other place where food can hide,
clearing a path as we go.

Most food cravings are not about satisfying a nutritional need or

imbalance. They seem to be more emotionally related, or God
forbid, are caused by plain old gluttony. Exactly why we
over-indulge is not completely understood, however our knowledge
about this subject continues to grow.

Listed below are some thoughts and ideas about food cravings:

- If the food isn't available, you can't eat it! Empty the cookie
jar and keep it that way! Keep healthy food choices on-hand.

- Recognize the feelings and emotions that lead-up to a food
craving. Do you have food cravings when you're bored, lonely, or
stressed? If you can identify a trigger, you can deal with the
emotion that's making you desire a certain food. Try to deal with
the triggers in the best way you can.

- Sometimes, even recognizing that a craving is about to happen
doesn't seem to help. Don't beat yourself-up. There is always
tomorrow. Call a friend, make good use of your support network
and share your feelings with someone.

- Get enough sleep. When you're tired, you're more likely to

crave things.

- Never give-up. When you "slip", press-in, bear-down, get a
grip, do whatever is necessary to re-gain control. Try to
practice restraint most of the time, but don't get legalistic and
un-balanced in your weight loss approach. Think moderation and
not abstinence at all times!

- Understand that self-control and discipline by themselves,
won't cut it! If you depend totally on yourself for control, you
will fail. Forming caring and supportive relationships is
required. If you do not currently have a support network, start
building one TODAY.

- Exercise. It increases feel-good endorphins that cut down on
your cravings. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical
activity every day.

- Use moderation. Instead of stuffing yourself with every kind of
food hoping that your craving will go away, eat 100 to 200
calories of your "craved" food.

- Substitute with low-fat foods and complex carbs. If you're
hungry for chocolate, eat non-fat chocolate yogurt. Try fig bars
or raisins for a sweet craving.

- Never skip a meal. Eat every three to five hours. Try six
smaller meals or regular meals with nutritious snacks.

- Understand that hunger craving are oftentimes stress related.
Practice other ways to treat chronic stress - a walk in the park,
spiritual connections, a cozy fireplace, baths...all these
stimulate neurochemicals that activate regions of the brain that
stimulate pleasure. Relaxation techniques may work by reducing
the psychological drives on stress output, which can be the root
causes of stress. Bottom line, substitute pleasurable experiences
for comfort foods.

- Beware of certain medications. They can stimulate appetite.
Drugs used for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder
can be appetite stimulants. Other drugs, both prescription and
over the counter, may influence appetite as well. If you are on a
medication, and troubled by food cravings, discuss this with your
doctor or pharmacist. You may be able to find an alternative that
doesn't send your cravings out of control.

- Distract Yourself. What's that old expression...idle hands are
the devils workshop? Get busy. Do anything other than cave-in to
your desire for food, and keep doing it until the cravings
subside.

- One final thought, take a look inside your refrigerator and
kitchen cabinets and do some general "house cleaning." Throw-out
all that unhealthy stuff that is waiting to sabotage your diet,
and start shopping more wisely. A little forethought and careful
planning will go a long way for improving your chances of
success.

Eat wisely, be happy, and live long!

Food Storage And Emergency Preparedness Are Now In Mlm

Hundreds of different products are sold through the business of network marketing (MLM or multi-level marketing). Companies selling soap, cosmetics, vitamins, nutritional supplements, energy drinks, long distance services, water filters, gold, and almost everything imaginable have long used MLM as their method of distribution. Newcomers to the MLM business are often owners of companies which have been in existence for several years. They discover that the network marketing industry is a way for them to move more product and create more wealth.

Using MLM and the home party system, a new kid on the block in network marketing is in the area of food storage and emergency preparedness. Customers may buy the products on a monthly basis at affordable prices in order to develop family preparedness. MLM is a home based business concept which allows people to introduce others to the products and the opportunity. By signing up people under them to buy and sell the products, they may be able to earn money from their downline which consists of all those signed up under them to a certain level.

Each network marketing company sets its own compensation plan to pay their distributors. They decide what percentages can be earned and how many levels to go deep and how far to go wide. Width is usually determined by those personally enrolled as distributors under the person. Depth is how many levels on which they will pay.

It is generally well known and accepted that the products in MLM are higher priced than comparable products in retail stores. The companies need to be able to pay their distributors from their profits. The owners of the companies are often the people who become the richest as they earn money from all the distributors who buy the products but who never made a dime because they did not qualify for the payouts.

However, this industry remains one of the few ways that a person can start for a very small investment of cash and have the potential to become wealthy. MLM has been making millionaires for years by allowing people to leverage themselves. They sign up people once and can get paid on them for years as they continue to order. Additionally, they get paid on the efforts of many other people whom they never know. As long as people are buying products and the distributor is active in the pay plan by personally purchasing monthly, there will be money to be made.

With the many disasters around the world and the bad economy causing havoc in peoples life, it is plain to see that emergency preparedness and food storage are worthy endeavors for everyone. Being prepared can cause a sense of well being and security if and when problems arise. One never knows when a tragedy will hit.

People who are interested in food storage and emergency preparedness or who want to find a home based business might consider this new endeavor in network marketing. There are good possibilities, and there is money to be made in this area.

The New Food Safety Bill and the Power of Targeted Fear

The Senates bi-partisan approval of overhauling the food safety system by granting the F.D.A. authority to implement stronger regulation, increased inspections and recall powers is great news and a testament to the persuasive powers of targeted fear. Many people dont fully appreciate how corrupt, poorly regulated and dangerous the industry currently is, which is why I recommend watching the documentary called Food Inc and reading Michael Pollan, but it appears that the most recent salmonella outbreak has finally pushed America to embrace stronger law enforcement over food companies.

Pollan teamed up with fellow food safety advocate Eric Schlosser to compose a New York Times Op-Ed on Monday in support of the legislation. Most intriguing among the many persuasive statistics they citefrom the fact that roughly 5,000 Americans die every year because of contaminated food to the notion that allocating $300 million annually for enhancing the F.D.A.s powers, as the legislation would require, is a pittance compared to the $152 billion spent each year on treating food related illness is that 80 percent of Americans support strengthening the F.D.A.s authority to regulate food.

This is highly unusual in todays hostile, anti-government climate, and it is also surprising when one considers that for years there have occurred tens of millions of food-contamination illnesses annually, according to The Times. But the most recent salmonella outbreak, spread by chickens raised in manure-infested factories and poisoning thousands, has garnered national attention and dramatically transformed public opinion.

In ways, this paradigm resembles the development of financial reform. In April only half the population favored stronger regulation of banks, according to a Gallup poll, even though Wall Street nearly destroyed the financial system in 2008 and has consistently manufactured devastating boom-bust cycles leading to mass bank runs every decade since Ronald Reagan unleashed the full force of the free market by brushing aside the Glass-Steagall Act. Contrived or not, the S.E.C.s lawsuit against Goldman Sachs during the summer shifted public opinion towards supporting reform, as a September Gallup poll shows that 61% approve the legislation.

Both developments suggest that, as usual, fear is the greatest motivator for action. But not just fear in any form. It must be targeted. Its one thing to say that the food industry kills thousands and poisons millions, but a far more effective way to rally the public is by exposing the disgusting filth that abounds in a particular factory responsible for a devastating salmonella outbreak. Similarly, with Wall Street, Americans have had trouble deciding whom they hate morethe financial firms, or the government for failing to prevent the sub-prime mortgage crisis and then bailing out the banks. The Goldman Sachs lawsuit, however, enabled the public to focus on an isolated display of inexcusable fiscal malfeasance, and the narrow hostility expanded into an overall condemnation of the financial sector, thus smoothing the path for financial reform.

This also helps explain why Anthem inadvertently helped Obama pass the new health care laws by jacking up premiums in California shortly before Congress voted. And it further clarifies why 9/11 pushed Bush and the public to pursue a strong counterterrorism agenda even though we had been attacked by Al Qaeda numerous times before, both on American soil and at U.S. embassies abroad.

One wonders, however, why the BP oil spill has not spurred an overwhelming push for a coherent plan to transcend fossil fuels and turn to clean energy.

The Year In Food A Calendar Of National Food Holidays

In America, we love our foodand we love our holidays. As it turns out, food is the focus of well over 365 national holidays, not including the entire weeks and months devoted to some edibles. Most of the holidays are informal, not official, so you won't find them on your average wall calendar. Still, the celebration of various cuisines and comestibles is sure to appeal to foodies of every stripe, from the humblest hot dog fan to gourmands aspiring to culinary school. Here's a quick month-by-month tour of some of our funniestand strangestfood holidays.

January
Giving us a sugar rush to beat the winter blahs, January brings National Cream Puff Day (January 2), National Marzipan Day (January 12), and National Blonde Brownie Day (January 22). However, perhaps our most quintessential of American desserts is celebrated on January 23: National Pie Day, which was created by the American Pie Council.

February
With February's food days, you could plan a palate-pleasing party, from National Stuffed Mushroom Day (February 4) and National Chocolate Fondue Day (February 5) to National Margarita Day (February 22) and National Tortilla Chip Day (February 24). Don't forget to include a bowl of mixed nutsNational Almond Day is February 16 and National Pistachio Day is February 26.

March
Love peanut butter, banana cream pie, white chocolate cheesecake, or lemon chiffon cake? Before you decide to give up sweets for Lent, celebrate these sinful treats on March 1, March 2, March 6, and March 29, respectively. If your tastes run more to lollipops or popsicles, you'll have to wait until March 28 for Something on a Stick Day.

April
April is for cheese lovers, from National Cordon Bleu Day (April 4) to National Cheese Fondue Day (April 11). That homey classic the grilled cheese sandwich is honored on April 12, and even the humble cheeseball has its day on April 17. For the lactose intolerant, there's Garlic Day (April 19), Lima Bean Respect Day (April 20), and National Raisin Day (April 30).

Gourmet foodies will love Maybut the rest of us might have to take a few culinary classes to compete. Start with an appetizer on National Escargot Day (May 24). Then, choose your entre: Roast Leg of Lamb (May 7), Coquilles St. Jacques (May 16), or Coq au Vin (May 29). Shut Down & Fined For Breaking Food Safety Laws

How do I comply with the law for food safety?

What is the food legal requirement?

What sort of food safety certificate do I need?

Whether you are starting from scratch or already have a food business, if you are selling and making food, then food safety training is an essential component of your food business.

The consequences of inaction are heavy and in many cases are imposed immediately.

Formal action is taken against all food businesses to be found cutting corners around food safety.

The first step is to obtain a UK Level 2 Food Safety Certificate.

On July 1 2009 Environmental health officers visited The Raja Halal Meat shop in Harrow to discover no food safety training. You will find out what happened to them a little later.

Why had no training been done? Many food businesses cite cost or too expensive, and coupled with the havent got time or cant allow my staff time off, particularly if they are quite busy or have a queue of customers, then risking one night of non-compliance over food safety standards seems much more appealing than splashing out profits on training and taking staff away from their duties.

Lets dispel these 2 common myths; a food safety certificate course taken online costs 25+VAT and pales into insignificance when compared to the fines imposed for not having training. Secondly, being too busy is no excuse given the food safety certificate can be obtained online, which means from any PC with an internet connection. A staff member can complete a food safety assessment in 2-3 hours from home and is very practical given that this training needs to be refreshed every 3 years.

The Environmental Health Officer is looking to see that all staff are (as the law says) appropriately trained.

You no longer need to worry about whether your local authority or council accepts certificate, because in doing food safety training you have met the legal obligation.

Once you receive your Level 2 Food Safety certificate, you are free to display it and most importantly use it as proof that you have met the legal requirement for food handlers.

Job done!

No, not quite. This is not the final step.

Pleading sheer ignorance and saying not knowing the law or being unaware of the food safety legal requirements is another excuse given to Environmental Health Officers. If a food business operates without compliance to food safety standards, they can be shut down on site.

Another look at the findings from the Raja Halal Meat shop environmental health inspection revealed that it was not properly registered with Brent Council.

This is your next step.

All food businesses, whether it be preparing, handling or selling food, must register their premises with the local authority or Council.

Along with no staff food safety training and the products found damaged by rodents at the Raja Halal Meat shop, it was promptly closed down and ordered to pay 1,857 in costs to the council. A larger food business found to be causing risks to public health could be fined much more.

To find out how seriously the courts treat food safety violations have a quick look at the Openshaw Kashmiri Cuisine takeaway in Manchester which on 17 November 2009 was fined 6,100 in fines and costs and closed for 8 days to remove filth and deal with a mice infestation.

The takeaway in Manchester was ultimately demolished with plans in place to construct a Morrisons Supermarket. On 23 November 2009, the Cambella Cafe in the Victoria Shopping centre, Southend, was fined more than 12,000 after mice droppings were found in food that was waiting to be sold.

While members of the public were able to see a lighter side citing cruelty to animals on the premise that the hygiene in these takeaways and cafes was probably poisoning the mice, the fact that many food businesses are not permanently shut down and life-bans given to owners is disconcerting, and as more food businesses are found guilty of cutting corners it will inevitably lead to public pressure on Councils to increase Environmental Health Inspectors, the length of time the food businesses are shut down and the size of fine.
