Food Poisoning--an Overview

What is Food Poisoning?

Food poisoning results when you eat food contaminated with bacteria or other pathogens such as parasites or viruses. Your symptoms may range from upset stomach to diarrhea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps and dehydration. Most such infections go undiagnosed and unreported.

But the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year about 76 million people in the United States become ill from pathogens in food, and about 5,000 of them die.

Over 55% of such cases are caused by improper cooking and storage of foods, and 24% by poor hygiene, such as not washing your hands while preparing food. Only 3% of cases are from unsafe food sources. Keeping your hands clean while working with food is the single most important thing you can do to prevent food poisoning.

About 20 organisms can cause food poisoning. After you eat food contaminated with bacteria, they will multiply in your stomach and bowels. Some bacteria give off a toxin when they multiply. As a result, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea occur. Vomiting and diarrhea are the body's way of eliminating the toxin, and most cases of food poisoning run their course without needing medical attention.

Not all invasive organisms cause vomiting as a symptom, but almost all of them cause diarrhea. Blood in your stool occurs in many types of food poisoning and is considered to be serious. Abdominal cramps are also common, and sometimes you will have a fever. Be sure to contact a physician if a fever or bloody stools are present.

Common Sources of Food Poisoning

Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial food poisoning in the USA. It causes several million cases a year, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Eating undercooked chicken or food that has been in contact with raw chicken most commonly causes campylobacter. The Center for Disease Control estimates that up to 70%-90% of chickens are infected with campylobacter.

To prevent the disease, cook chicken thoroughly, with no pink remaining. Wash your hands frequently when handling raw chicken. Use paper towels to dry your hands. If you are using a sponge or dish-cloth to clean the counters, use a fresh one after working with raw chicken. Wash your cutting board with a diluted bleach solution before using again. And any utensils or dishes having contact with raw chicken need to be washed and rinsed with soap and water before using again.

E. coli 0157: H7 infection causes an estimated 25,000 cases of food poisoning each year in the USA. Most of these result from undercooked, contaminated ground beef. The organism lives in the intestines of healthy cows. Meat can become contaminated during slaughter when intestinal fecal matter is mixed with beef that is ground into hamburger. Contaminated meat looks and smells normal, so it is not readily detectable. Bacteria on cow udders or milking machines can also contaminate raw milk.

To prevent this form of food poisoning, cook all ground beef until no pink is showing. Make sure all of the meat juices are clear, not pink or red, and that the inside of the meat is hot. If you are served an undercooked hamburger in a restaurant, send it back. Consume only pasteurized milk products, and drink only water treated with chlorine or other disinfectants.

Botulism is caused by clostridium botulinum, a spore-forming bacteria. This form of food poisoning is very rare, but can be life-threatening. It may result from eating improperly processed, low-acid foods such as green beans, mushrooms, spinach, olives and beef or fish. Improper home canning methods often account for botulism cases. Improperly processed commercial products can also cause this serious disorder.

To avoid botulism, don't even taste canned food that is soft, deteriorating, fermenting or doesn't smell right. It isn't worth a life-threatening illness. When in doubt, throw it out.

Infant botulism is more common in spring and summer, and is rare in winter. Infants younger than one year of age are at the highest risk. Symptoms include muscle weakness, a weak cry, difficulty in feeding, constipation, head lag, increased heart rate and a decreased gag reflex. A baby with botulism is described as a "floppy baby," as the infant will have weak muscles, especially in the arms, legs and neck.

Infant botulism has been associated with eating honey. The Center for Disease Control suggests that honey should not be given to infants under six months old, and the Honey Industry Council extends the safety limit to one year. Honey is not an essential food for infants, and should never be given to them.

Summary of Food Poisoning

Most symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea are due to viral infections and are not true cases of food poisoning. An accurate diagnosis can be difficult because the pathogenic organisms are found in different kinds of food and have varying incubation periods. Also, eating a substance and getting sick immediately afterwards is not the typical course for food poisoning. Most people are not aware that food eaten several days previously can be the cause of food poisoning. Always be sure to consult a physician when experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Fast Food Vs Home Cooking

Today the society is very tired as well as overworked. Everyone is extremely busy and is constantly running a fast pace of life everyday. Regardless of the fact, whether their running to meet the hectic lifestyle and pace of life is precious or not, they run to meet the need effectively. To bring to a normal routine, you need to follow some cheap meal ideas so that you catch up some time to stretch and also save your hard earned money. You can provide a nutritious as well as wholesome dinner even with limited ideas and money, provided you plan and get the ingredients well on time.

The fast food makers have caught the running spree and have coaxed people into eating fast food. As people lack time, they just rush to the fast food and make themselves comfortable. The very idea of returning home after a tiring day or work and then later on cooking for the entire family is not done with a happy note and you are inclined to look on for some fast food. Though, you know it is not good for health, you ignore as they are readymade and you need not spend your good time in the hot kitchen. Moreover, you have to prepare for the coming day as well as help your children with homework, do the laundry work and clean the mess.

It is normally the parents who run in the aim of avoiding the hassles of running to grocery shopping, cleaning before and after dinner and cooking. They prefer to go home as well as relax so that they wake up and do them all over again. The main difficulty is that eating fast food inevitably causes obesity and is no way a healthy choice to be considered as the complete meal or food. There are cheap meal ideas that take very little time in preparation and coming home to eat a good meal without much expense itself makes the meal more delicious.

The cheap meal idea consists of meat, pasta, vegetable and rice in one dish. A quick stir with slices of meat or beef is good and chicken can also go good, add soy sauce and cook completely. Add and stir few vegetables to the same mix with a cup of water. The meat and vegetables get cooked with the rice. This makes a cheap meal idea and can be eaten contentedly as it has everything to make it an opulent and nutritious meal. You can also use macaroni as well as cheese and add some flavor with tomato sauce and make the food tastier. This will save your money and keep you in good health. The fast food is convenient food for one or two days, but is not recommended as daily food as it will cause your health.

Khmer Cuisine - Cambodian Food

Do you love to try the local foods when you are travelling in a new country? Do you relish wandering the winding back streets of a strange, bustling city to find unique street food or a local restaurant offering traditional local dishes? If so, a trip to Cambodia might be worth your while.

Cambodian cuisine is often overlooked or forgotten next to the popularity of its neighbouring countries, Vietnam and Thailand. Indeed, many traditional Cambodian dishes are shared with these countries, given their common historical influences. However many Khmer dishes have their own flavour, ingredients, recipes and traditions, giving Khmer cuisine a distinct identity of its own. Traditional cuisine in Cambodia was nearly wiped out during the horrors of the Khmer regime in the 70s, however recently it has definitely been undergoing a revival, with cooking classes now offered in many of the main tourist centres. When travelling through Cambodia a cooking class is definitely a worthwhile experience, and there are many dishes which are highly recommended and worth keeping an eye out for, if you want a truly authentic foody experience.

Cambodian food is predominantly influenced by rice and fish. The country is covered with wetlands, and the monsoon rains, which begin in April, inundate the vibrant green rice paddies throughout the country. The Mekong River which travels through the heart of the country holds an astonishing number of freshwater fish, and Tonle Sap Lake is believed to have more fish than any other lake in the world. Therefore it is not surprising that rice and fish are staple ingredients in Cambodian cuisine; rice especially is eaten every day and with most meals and one key ingredient which signifies food as distinctly Cambodian is prahok, a crushed, salted, and fermented fish paste.

Khmer cuisine has much in common with neighbouring Thailand; they both use a combination of spices and flavours to create a delicate balance between saltiness, sweetness, sourness and bitterness, although Cambodian food tends to use less sugar and coconut cream for flavour. Most notably, Cambodians also tend to use less chilli, and as a result traditional dishes often dont have the bite which Thai food is well known for.

Vietnam and Cambodia share some French influences in their cuisine. The baguette is known as nom pang in Khmer, and delicious, crispy baguettes can be found throughout both Vietnam and Cambodia. Nom pang can also mean a type of sandwich, similar to the banh mi in Vietnam. Delicious nom pang can be found at many street stalls, and is usually filled with sliced or minced meat (with Cambodian flavours, of course) and served with fresh salad and pickled vegetables. What most people know as Vietnamese coffee is also very popular in Cambodia; traditionally brewed in a Phin filter and sweetened with condensed milk.

Cambodian curries also show traces of cultural influences from India, with spice pastes blended from a mix of cardamom, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and turmeric. To give Cambodian flavours to the curry pastes, local ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime, coriander and galangal are used.

So what are some local dishes which definitely should not be missed when visiting Cambodia?

For breakfast, you cant go past Nom Banh Chok, sometimes also referred to as Khmer noodles. Nom Banh Chok is typical breakfast food in Cambodia and consists of rice noddles topped with aromatic green fish gravy, garnished with fresh mint leaves, green beans, bean sprouts and sometimes cucumber, which gives a pleasant crunch to the dish. Additional flavour also comes from lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and turmeric root.

Fish amok is a traditional Cambodian dish not to be missed. It consists of seafood covered with coconut milk and kroeung (a Cambodia curry paste) and steamed in banana leaves.

The Khmer Red Curry is less spicy than the red curries of neighbouring Thailand, but still very full of flavour. It can include chicken, beef or fish plus green beans, eggplant, potatoes, lemon grass, coconut milk and kroeung.

If desserts are more your thing, sticky rice is a great option, often accompanied by tropical fruits such as mango, durian and coconut milk.

To learn more about the Cambodian cuisine when travelling through the country, there are cooking classes available, mainly in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Its a great way to learn more about preparing Khmer dishes using traditional methods, such as pounding herbs and spices with a mortar and pestle or steaming foods in locally sourced banana leaves. Most classes will also include a trip to the local markets to learn more about Cambodian vegetables and herbs, and you will usually be given a recipe book to take home with you. Its a great way for tourists to share the local culinary experiences.

Food Craving Junk Food Addiction

We hear a lot about what causes food craving especially junk food addiction but not a lot of why we continue with our food craving after these causes go away. For example one cause for us to start craving food may have been because of a death of a close relative that causes depression. We start eating junk food in greater and greater quantities.

Time usually resolves the food craving issue and your depression reduces and eventually disappears. So why have you still have got this food craving for more and more junk food? I am sorry to say that it is because of a plan.

Most junk food is bought, very little is home made. If you made junk food at home you would probably make it from good nutritious ingredients that contain very little of what causes the continual food craving to eat more. I define junk food made at home as food that is not required to maintain your health but as a treat and not one that causes a food craving for more because it has good stuff in it and none of the stuff that causes craving. For example we all love chocolate. Most bought chocolate tastes great but at the same time is loaded with sugar (A real craving ingredient) whereas you may make chocolate at home and use cacao bean powder and natural sweeteners. Bought chocolate is made from cocoa, which is derived from cacao beans but refined and most of the goodness taken out of them plus lots of sugar is added which causes the food craving.

So what is this plan? Before I go any further I will say that there is nothing wrong with the occasional splurge on a night out eating junk food. What you have to keep in mind is the occasional. Let me ask you this, how do the junk food conglomerates stay in business? By making you crave for more and more of their junk food of course. How do they do this? By loading their junk food full of all the ingredients that causes the food craving for more. These are things like sugar, bad fats, bad oils, salt and a host of other bad things that causes the craving for more.

If you have a craving for something and keep wanting more and more isnt that akin to addiction! Dont we call addicts druggies? In this case if someone who is craving for heroin is called an addict couldnt someone food craving for junk food be called an addict in the same vein. Of course they could. But let me tell you something Its not entirely your fault.

It is especially in the food conglomerates interests to make you crave for more and more of their product. The stinking thing about this is they can trumpet that they are doing nothing illegal. Sure they are not according to the law but morally that is another thing. So on they go loading their junk food with all the ingredients that cause a craving for more feeding your food craving. It is not in their interests to load them with natural sweeteners and such that will not cause you to crave for more and more.

Remember cigarettes, how many years did the cigarette companies say that there was nothing harmful in smoking. They were doing nothing illegal either they said. (Actually they were, they hid the analyses that proved they were causing cancer) That did not help all the cancer patients, did it? Isnt smoking cigarettes a habit and therefore a drug habit that makes you crave for more.

Getting back to junk food addiction, eating junk food and the subsequent food craving for more isnt bad for your health, is it? Do you really believe this when you weigh twice as much as you should, run out of breath, get all those body problems you did not seem to have before, reduced quality of life and probably die years before your time. Do you want to continue living that way?

The thing is, is that there are so many ways you can satisfy your need for food without the food cravings. Ways you can indulge in those favorite chocolate dishes and other kinds of sweet deserts that are just as enjoyable as sugar sweetened junk types.

I should point out that some cravings are natural. It is well know that pregnant women have food craving and there are many reasons for this. After all a womans body is working overtime to grow a healthy baby. Some food cravings are simply the result of the bodys need for extra calories during pregnancy. Generally though, these cravings are for unusual foods not junk food.

So all you other people do yourself a favor learn how to stop your food craving, especially junk food addiction. Go and watch the Fastest Way to Reduce Weight video and learn more about the reasons for eating junk food, gaining weight and what you can do about it.

Learning The Basics Behind Food Wine For Better Cooking

If you are one of the thousands of people who don't know a lot about wine, then this article is for you. Here, you will learn a little something about food wine and what wines should be pared with what foods. It is impossible to learn everything at once, but this will steer you in the right direction. You no longer have to belong to the uninformed masses.

The old rule that white is best with white meats and that red is best with red meats still stands today. Although things are a little more complicated now, it is still a good beginning rule. Another rule to follow in most cases for food wine is that each taste should be counteractive.

What this means is that each taste of food or wine should completely mask the taste of the other. Food wines are supposed to enhance the food's taste by acting as a palate cleanser, making each bite of food taste as good as the first. And of course, it is vice versa for the wine flavor.

If you can taste the flavor of the wine or food over the other item, then you probably are working with a bad match. It is harder to match food and wine now because so many different flavors of food get worked into a single dish. The best rule for these cases is that the body of it should match the food. Heavier foods get heavier wines and vice versa.

The main determination for food wine combinations is the balance of sweetness, acidity and bitterness of both the food and wine. It is pretty easy to figure out what should go with what foods by considering the wine and food characteristics.

If a sweet food is being served, pair it with a sweeter wine. For bitter foods, a more bitter wine is in order. The best way to determine the acidity of a food is to determine if it would go better with more acid added.

For example, adding lemon to a fish means that a more acidic wine should be consumed. Some common white wines that are acidic are: Rieslings, most sparkling wines and white Bordeauxs. Acidic red wines include: Gamays, Pinot Noirs and Sangioveses. Sweet white wines include: White Zinfandels, other forms of Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. Sweet red wines can include: Port and Lambrusco. There are not many bitter white wines, but there are some bitter red wines. These can include, red Zinfandels, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons.

Now you know the basics about food wine and how to pair wines with different foods. There is still a lot more information out there, so if you want to learn more, then you should pursue those options. Joining a wine club is a good option, as well as just doing independent research. This will help you to become quite knowledgeable about wines.

FDA Food Safety Comments, Defending Family Farmers, Blocked Another Fed Website SNAFU

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Will Fantle, 715-839-7731

FDA Food Safety Rule Webpage Repeatedly Crashes in Advance of Important Public Comment Deadline Individuals and Organizations Unable to Enter Feedback as November 15 Deadline Looms - Cornucopia Requests Extension

CORNUCOPIA, WI: Family farm and consumer advocates have been working for weeks to ensure meaningful public comment on the FDA's proposed food safety rules (http://www.fda.gov/Food/guidanceregulation/FSMA/ucm334114.htm). Now the government website that serves as a portal for the public's comments on food safety is offline, out-of-service, or even refusing to accept comments.

-This is potentially disenfranchising thousands of farmers and consumers, and is flat-out unacceptable,- says Will Fantle, Codirector of the Wisconsin-based Cornucopia Institute. -We have been working for months, as have many other organizations across the country, to raise public awareness of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the proposed rules developed to implement it. With the public comment period set to close on November 15, we have received numerous reports from our members that they cannot send in timely comments because the portal for doing so, regulations.gov, is not working.-

The FSMA was passed by Congress in late 2010 after anger boiled over following years of food poisoning outbreaks, associated with dangerous fecal pathogens, that impacted peanuts, spinach, sprouts, melons and imported foods. The FDA's draft rules, however, saddle local and organic family-scale farmers with unnecessary and expensive prevention practices more appropriate for riskier industrial processing and distribution systems. And the draft rules fail to address a health control strategy for the primary source of many of the fecal-generated pathogens - industrial-scale feedlots and livestock facilities.

Many visitors to the FDA's comment portal, for the two dockets found at http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2011-N-0921-0199 and http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2011-N-0920-0188, are reporting this message: -We are experiencing temporary technical difficulties and are working to restore full operations as soon as possible.-

This message has been sporadically reported by members of the public for the past several weeks and now appears to be the standard case for anyone attempting to access the webpage. At other times, citizens have reportedly been advised to resubmit any comments they might have posted while other visitors to the website, in November, were greeted with a message that -planned system maintenance- was being conducted and would be completed by August 6.

-In light of this ongoing barrier to public comments, we believe it is incumbent on the FDA to fix their webpage problems immediately and then extend the public comment period for another 30 days thereafter,- said Fantle. In a letter dated today, sent by mail to Michael R. Taylor the deputy commissioner for foods at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Cornucopia formally requested the extension. -These rules threaten to drive many family-scale farmers out of business, and they and the consumers who buy their fruits and vegetables deserve to be heard so that the FDA can make needed changes.-

This is not the only time that the federal government's public comment portal has experienced difficulties. Cornucopia has noted in the past that individuals seeking to provide feedback on proposals affecting the USDA's National Organic Program and its National Organic Standards Board have encountered similar website availability issues. The farm policy organization has directly relayed those observations to officials during public meetings. Yet little appears to have changed.

-We intend to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request this time inquiring about the problems associated with the FDA's food safety comment page screw-up,- added Fantle. -We are very interested in understanding more about the nature of this problem and if it was created by a contractor working for the government - maybe even the same contractor/contractors that have been implicated in the debacle concerning the government's health care website.-

-30-

MORE: The government's website was down all day yesterday (Monday, November 11) and is still down this morning. For instructions on submitting comments through snail mail please see the current action alert on the Cornucopia Institute website: http://www.cornucopia.org/fda-online-comment/.

Types Of Food To Avoid If You Have Gout

Gout sufferers know the pain. They may know that food causes their pain, but most do not know what and why.

Gout is inflammation of the joints caused by the excessive amounts of uric acid in the blood stream, which the kidneys are not able to filer out and are left in the blood to settle in the joints. This causes inflammation, which causes significant pain.

The uric acid is caused by purines and fat in the diet. These are the ingredients in the foods that need to be avoided.

If you are reading this you are curious about what types of food need to be avoided when someone has gout. That is commendable that you are looking to a holistic approach. There are specific types of food to that you should not put on your plate.

Meats

Meats should be avoided because of the high fat content. Beef, pork, and organ meats are high on the list in the meat group. Some find that chicken does not have enough fat to cause an affect, and some find that it does. When making food choices, keep that in mind.

It is not the protein in the meat that causes the pain. It is the fat, which reacts like the purines in other foods. This is why some have found that beef jerky does not cause them gout pain. It appears to have less of a concentration of fat.

Vegetables

Typically people do not think of vegetables as causing gout and many nutritionists would shudder if they heard us say to avoid any vegetables. Americans typically do not eat enough vegetables. However, there are some people who do need to give up some vegetables due to their high level of purines. These foods are such items as mushrooms, corn, and potatoes. There are not a lot of vegetables on the list but these are foods that need to be avoided.

Interestingly, beans and lentils are also very high in purines and should be avoided at all times. These foods have high levels of purine, which starts the painful reaction.

Dairy

Dairy is on the list of foods to avoid because of the high fat content. Most dairy products are made from whole milk and contain high levels of fat. This is a group of foods that need to be avoided if someone has gout. Any dairy product that is made from whole milk, and whole milk itself should be avoided. That includes ice cream, cheese (any kind made from whole milk), and butter.

Other Foods

Under this list we will cover yeast and alcohol. These are foods that should be avoided. The difficult thing is that these can be in foods without our knowing it, especially the yeast. This means that you will need to read every label.

What To Do

When reviewing all these types of foods that cause gout, you may be wondering if there is anything else gout suffers can eat. The answer is yes. However, knowing what to avoid is very important. The difficult thing is to avoid these as ingredients in processed foods.

There are some doctors who now say that vegetables, which contain purines, do not need to be avoided. However, the evidence that purines do cause the uric acid is enough to warrant avoiding all foods, which contain the purines.

No one disagrees that meats are the worst offenders, and specifically the organ meats. However, the gout suffer who wishes to alter their diet to make significant changes should perhaps include the vegetables that also contain purines.

The Methods of Preserving Food

Food preservation is a method of slowing down spoilage and extending the shelf life of food. This has been used way back a few centuries ago by the earlier inhabitants. There a number of ways to preserve food. Some of these are in ancient ways, and still being used until today. Some of the most common preservation techniques are freezing and refrigeration, canning, salting, pickling, drying, and sugaring.

Freezing and refrigeration is commonly used these days by the help of a refrigerator and/or freezer, a staple in everyone's kitchen. Root cellars and cold cellars were historically used before to keep food, and are still used in some parts of the world, especially in the colder regions.

Canning includes cooking of food and storing it in sterile jars or cans, then boiling containers to kill any remaining bacteria. This method is sometimes combined with pickling. Jams, jellies and preserves are some example. Salting or also called curing, uses the osmosis process that draws moisture from the meat. Meat is cured with salt or sugar, and sometimes a combination of both.

Pickling on the other hand is the process of using an edible anti-microbial liquid. Commonly-used pickling agents are vinegar, alcohol, vegetable oil, olive oil or brine. It is sometimes categorized as chemical pickling, which usually involves boiling or heating until the food becomes saturated. We have cucumbers, corned beef, eggs and fish as familiar examples. Considered one of the oldest methods is drying. In this process, enough water activity is removed in the food to put off bacterial growth which hinders decay.

Sun drying and smoking are common techniques, taking beef jerky and raisins as common examples. Similar to pickling, sugar is used to preserve fruits. Peaches, pears, apples and apricots are preserved by drying it out first then packing it in sugar. Raw sugar can be used or a high-content liquid, such as honey or molasses.

Take a look around you. Just imagine how life would be like if preserving food was not at all discovered. You would not even be aware of many of the favorite foods you eat today.

Food Allergies - Causes and Cure

Food allergies often occur when you are not eating the right stuff. In addition to this, your immune system is also not helping you in any way. You must build a strong immune system, by eating a lot of natural products which have a lot of medicinal value. Eating food rich in enzymes will also help you. Gas, bloating, bad gut health, belching, stomach problems and heart burning sensation are the common symptoms of food allergies.

Cooked foods contribute to chronic illness, because their enzyme content is damaged and thus requires us to make our own enzymes to process the food. The digestion of cooked food uses valuable metabolic enzymes in order to help digest your food. Digestion of cooked food demands much more energy than the digestion of raw food. In general, raw food is so much more easily digested that it passes through the digestive tract in 1/2 to 1/3 of the time it takes for cooked food.

Common reasons for such problems:

Modern life style: Due to modern life style, people have often forgotten the basic nutrients required by the body. They end up eating junk food, fast food like burgers, chips, fried stuff and pizzas which are high in butter and cheese and hence do not get digested fast.

Lack of exercise: Exercise is important for your digestion. Your food products need to be broken down if they have to absorb the nutrients present in the food, you also require enzymes for their absorption. These are found only in raw fruits, raw vegetables and milk products such as curds, soya milk etc. You must also consider eating green grams, fresh sprouts which are rich in enzymes.

Not eating fruits and vegetables: Have you forgotten the importance of fruits and vegetables? They are rich in fibre and carbohydrates which are essential for digestion. If your diet lacks these things, you are bound to suffer from stomach problems.

Food rich in fat: Oily and fried food is good to taste but are heavy on your stomach. It is best to bring their consumption down to a minimum level, if you can't completely avoid them.

Medicines: Some medicines may cause problems. You must tell your physician about the possible allergies you usually experience when you have certain medicines. They can suggest you medicines which may be good to treat your ailments and at the same time does not cause any harm.

Dearth of sleep: Lack of sleep may disturb your digestive pattern too.

You can buy all natural supplements that can help add enzymes to your diet. Regardless of whether you take all natural supplements or start eating all natural products, you need to address the problem. Eat healthy and lead a happy and healthy life!

Foods To Avoid For Tinnitus Relief

The American Tinnitus Association believes there is no actual tinnitus cure at this time. But they acknowledge there are many ways to manage it and minimize tinnitus symptoms. Did you know that some common foods and food additives are known to increase tinnitus symptoms? Just eliminating these four things from your diet could bring you partial or even total tinnitus relief.

Too much salt restricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure and reduces blood flow into the ears. Increase in blood pressure is directly linked to increased tinnitus. When salt intake is reduced, many people notice a lessening of ringing in the ears.

Salt is necessary for life, but the modern diet contains way too much salt. It is hidden in most processed and pre-packaged foods. And some seemingly healthy food can hold a sodium surprise. A serving a canned soup can have more salt than a bag of potato chips! You should start reading labels to intelligently limit your salt intake.

The next food to avoid is to stop tinnitus is sugar. Here is a simplified version of what happens when you eat sugar. First your blood sugar rises, then it falls. When it falls the temporary lack of glucose to the ears can eventually cause tinnitus. Sugar can also cause tinnitus by causing adrenalin release, which causes vasoconstriction in the inner ear. Too much caffeine can have the same effect.

But don't switch to artificial sweeteners instead. They can be even worse for tinnitus and your general health than sugar! One of the worst is aspartame which is found in many diet foods including diet soda. Aspartame goes by the name NutraSweet. Also known as the "blue stuff".

Aspartame causes damage to the nervous system and can cause tinnitus. So you need to stop your diet soda habit if you want to stop tinnitus.

Did you know that artificial sweeteners have been shown not to help people lose weight anyway? They actually increase your craving for sweets and carbohydrates! Try a non-caloric natural sweetener, stevia, instead. It can be found in most grocery stores. If not, try your local health food store.

The last thing to avoid for tinnitus relief is a flavor enhancer called Monosodium Glutamate known as MSG. It breaks down to glutamate in the body which acts much like to aspartame. Glutamate, like aspartame, is an excitatory neuro-transmitter which can cause tinnitus.

MSG can be hidden in vegetable protein, natural flavorings, spice mixes, and more. And it doesn't have to be added to the label as an ingredient. This is another reason to avoid processed and pre-packaged food as much as possible for your general health and for tinnitus relief.

When you hear MSG, you may think of Chinese food. You may have heard of "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" where people develop headaches, break out in a sweat, and get flushed because of the high levels of MSG in some Chinese food.

So if you are searching for answers on how to cure tinnitus, reducing or eliminating these four culprits is a great place to start.

Food Storage - Some Food For Thought

Many foods and drinks come in packaging that's just not practical to use on a daily basis and which won't keep the content fresh once the packaging is opened./p>

That's easy enough to fix... You just buy some storage containers and put the food in them to keep it nice and fresh and healthy, right?

And most food containers nowadays can be placed in the freezer and microwave, saving you from having to dirty your cookwear and other storage containers, right?

And being the 21st century most of the containers you'll look at are plastic, right?

But does it really matter what sort of plastic storage containers you place your food and drink in? Yes it does!

There is growing concern in the medical community, based on credible research from multiple studies in a number of countries, that certain types of plastics are poisoning the food we put in them.

This happens through a process called "leaching", where certain chemicals in the plastic transfer across to whatever is in contact with it, in this case being food and drink which you then consume.

There's also mounting evidence to suggest that the rate of leaching increases when certain plastics are heated, such as in a microwave, in the sun, by hot food or drink being placed in them or when the plastic is scratched or cracked.

What this means for you is that you need to ensure that you buy the right sort of plastic storage container for the task at hand, or a storage container made from a safe alternate, proven material.

If you want to play it totally safe, then buy storage containers for your food and drink made of glass or ceramic.

Neither glass nor ceramic is suspected of causing health problems and most food containers made from them are nowadays microwave and dishwasher safe. Just check before you buy.

In many cases a glass or ceramic container will last far longer than a plastic one will, making it more economical in the long run.

Glass and ceramic can also usually be kept cleaner than plastic, which tends to discolour over time, particularly if you regularly use it in a microwave to cook foods that more readily stain, such as tomatoes and other foods with higher sugar and/or acidic content.

Glass and ceramic also mark less easily than plastic and if it does, there are no known health concerns if you continue to use it.

These qualities will more than make up for the advantages of plastic, such as its pliability, lightness, being hard to break and, for some plastics, its resistance to a range of temperatures from the freezer to the microwave.

However, if you still decide you want plastic storage containers for your food and cooking needs then there are some plastics that have raised few, if any, concerns amongst the medical community.

The safest plastics are identified by the recycling number on the container. This is usually stamped on the bottom of the container, but can also be found on the lid in some instances. The recycling number appears in or next to a triangle.

The recycling number is based on the type of plastic used, or more correctly, the chemicals and compounds in that plastic.

There are seven (7) types of plastic commonly used by today's manufacturers and four (4) of them have no known risk when used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations to store food and drink.

If you don't use the plastic container in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations then your safe plastic food container could become potentially dangerous over time.

The seven (7) types of plastic as identified by their recycling number, common uses and known risks:

1 - Single use containers, such as disposable water, juice, soda & soft drink bottles, some jars, such as for spreads and condiments, and some squeezable bottles, such as for honey.

No known risk if used as intended - once only. Some concern over possible leaching with extended use, so dispose of after original contents are finished.

2 - Milk & juice containers, yoghurt cartons, supplement bottles, margarine tubs and some plastic bags.

No known risk.

3 - Clear food packaging, such as refillable containers, lunch boxes, some cling wrap, some squeeze bottles and some condiment and spread jars.

Increasing concern over potential leaching. Avoid where possible, particularly if heating or hot food or drink is involved.

4 - Bread bags, frozen food bags, some squeezable bottles, such as for honey or mustard, microwave safe cling wrap, grocery bags and some bottles.

No known risk.

5 - Dishwasher & microwave safe reusable containers, takeaway containers, ready to eat fruit containers, kids cups, ketchup bottles, yoghurt cartons, margarine tubs, straws and some baby bottles.

Has a high melting point and therefore is safe for heating food in the microwave and can go in the dishwasher. No known risk of chemical leaching.

6 - Meat trays, disposable cups & plates, Styrofoam cups, egg cartons, carryout containers and opaque plastic cutlery.

Concern over leaching of chemicals, particularly if stored for a long time, particularly over one (1) year, and when used for hot liquids or foods. Avoid where possible.

7 - Most baby bottles (unless labelled bisphenol-A (BPA) free), sippy cups, children's hard plastic plates & bowls.

While not all plastics marked 7 contain BPA you will often not know. To be safe avoid them all.

If you stick to storing your food in containers marked 5 then, based on what is known today, you should be safe, even if you use these containers in the microwave, for hot food and drink or wash them in the dishwasher.

It also appears that plastic containers marked 2 and 4 are safe for you over the longer term, so long as you don't put them in your microwave or use them for hot food or drink. You will also need to avoid washing them in your dishwasher or with hot water.

It also appears to be prudent to dispose of your plastic containers marked 2, 4 or 5 if they become scratched or cracked.

Finally, here's a few more tips when selecting and using plastic containers for your food and drink needs:

Avoid plastics that are not marked with a recycling number.

Buy a bottle marked 5 or a stainless steel bottle that you can keep refilling for you drinking water/sports drink needs.

Baby bottles - use BPA-free bottles or glass bottles.

Buy your meat and fish from the butcher and fishmonger directly to avoid the plastic trays and wrapping used by the supermarkets, or if you can't do this, transfer the meat and fish to a suitable storage container as soon as you get it home.

How To Start Your Own Baby Food Business Part#3 Naming, Taglines, & Logo Creation

Naming

You have probably already thought up a clever name for your baby food business. It is one of the most gratifying parts of the startup phase. You probably woke up in the middle of the night with some fabulous name or had some sort of naming epiphany while taking a shower.

But if you haven't come up with a name yet let me help you come up with a strategy for creating the right name for your business.

Branding Yourself.

A quick and easy way to name your company is to give it your own name. Like: "Mischelle's Baby Food Catering" or "Mischelle's Baby Food Service". It is quick, it is easy, and if you add your last name it is unlikely that someone else has already trade marked the name. "Chef Mischelle Davis' Baby Food Bistro".

The Thesaurus Strategy.

A good thesaurus is your best friend when trying to find the right name. If you don't have one on your bookshelf you can go to an online thesaurus.

Spend time looking up synonyms for words that relate to what you do. Mix and match the words coming up with lots of combinations that seem to fit your personality and the mission of your baby food business. During my 15 year career in high tech I helped name several companies and lots of products. Whether we came up with a name or selves or hired a fancy, high-priced branding or advertising company to help us we ALWAYS broke out the thesaurus.

You'll need several potential names as some enterprising mompreneur may have already trade marked one of the names. Try playing around with synonyms to words like: baby, food, plate, cup, fresh, new, dinner, meal, nutritious, good, healthy, little, sweet, farm, chef, bliss, tummy, spring, birth, mother, etc.

The Contest Method.

If you are not the creative type and are more concerned about the operational pieces of getting a baby food company up and running, you can always turn the naming of your company into a marketing event.

You may already be a member of an online parenting group. Most cities have a Google or Yahoo! news group dedicated to local parenting issues. In big cities like Seattle every neighborhood has one. Tell the parents in your online community that you are going to be launching a baby food service and offer FREE baby food to the person who comes up with your company name.

This is a great way to create some buzz for your company and get your potential customers involved. During the later chapters of this book you will learn just how important customer involvement is.

Taglines

It's difficult starting a new business and creating an effective business name and brand. Businesses often have names that don't particularly resemble their products and services - a tagline can help clarify.

Taglines are typically descriptive phrases that accompany a business name. E.g. Sprouts ' "Catering to baby's nutritional needs". Taglines help explain what your business does or create a feeling associated with it. They should be simple and memorable.

There are generally two types of taglines. Descriptive: they explain what your business does. Emotional: They create a tone or feeling about your business.

When creating a tagline follow these simple rules.
- Keep It Simple - short and simple, easy to remember
- Affirmative - people like positive statements - negatives are a turn-off
- Appealing - the tagline should spark interest
- Enduring - your tagline might around for years, so don't add text that could date it
Baby food catering, delivery, etc. is a new idea. Help potential customers quickly identify what you do by choosing a good tagline.

Logo Creation

Since any business that is associated with babies is inherently emotional and cute you can feel free to break all of the corporate rules about logo creation. Have fun! Get creative. In the case of a baby food business it can actually be positive. But remember when choosing a name, creating a tagline, and developing a logo this is a FOOD BUSINESS. Food that people need to feel good about giving their babies. You need to establish that you are trustworthyeven before they try the food. So don't go crazy.

I have worked for some software companies that would easily spend $250,000 creating a logo. Most of us don't have that kind of money to spend when starting a new business. But luckily there are great new ways to get "killer creative" at affordable prices.
If you don't have a friend who is a graphic designer consider looking for one of the online logo creation services. Some do surprisingly good work.

During the creation of Sprouts we used DesignOutpost You post your logo requirements and desired price and artists compete to win your business. You can see some of the logo designs that we did not choose in the appendix.

Health Food Stores Grand Rapids Michigan

In looking for a health food store in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I decided to look at the kind of person who patronizes a health food store. Is not everybody interested in health? Maybe, but not everybody cares to shop there. Those who shop in a natural food store or a health food store in Michigan, are often people who trust themselves more than most others trust themselves.

Health food store shoppers are quite often philosophical, broad minded and big picture lookers. They think education comes from sincere motivation to
learn, not hunger for a badge or a degree. Health food store patrons are often self motivated. Most people are order takers. Most people prefer to
be told how their body works, and not test it out for themselves. Only people who care enough about health to experiment on themselves will shop at a
health food store. And that experimentation is quite often proactive and preventative rather than reactive.

The mainstream American is getting more curious. More and more people think experiments are smart. They test fruit and vegetable drinks on their
bodies. They use herbal and homeopathic remedies that regular doctors doubt will help as well as drugs help. The natural cures may be considered too
weak to cause any valuable change in the human body.

Is pharmaceutical medicine considered experimental? Not according to faithful customers. Most people in my home town of Grand Rapids, Michigan, grew
up expecting an MD to make all their health decisions for them. They choose to think about their careers, their kids birthday parties, their

investments, their sports teams, their schools, their vacations and their art. Thinking about treatment for small or big ailments is too much trouble.

How would you know which natural remedy to try or who to trust? Such questions are huge enough to scare most consumers in the United States. It is better to be safe. It is much less work to not look for alternatives. MDs seem to satisfy the questions of most consumers.

Patrons of a health food store, however, take joy in the mysteries of health instead of fear them. Such people think the body is so sensitive that a mere herb can really be felt and can really facilitate healing.

We should admire people who have the courage to try healing from more than one perspective. It is usually a highly responsible, highly motivated
individual who takes a lot of responsibility upon him or her self when they look for solutions regarding maintenance of their body. The word holistic
is used to refer to natural medicine. It is meant to refer to viewing a whole person, not just an illness. It implies that they who are not holistic
do not look at a whole people.

I love health food stores. I love recognizing the power of food to nourish and heal a human body. I hope more and more people will shop there. I
hope more and more self styled healers, who offer commnts on foods and herbs that heal, will sprout up all over, so real human creativity can be more
commonly applied to the art of healing.

How will we decide who to trust in health food stores? The same way we come to trust carpet cleaners, school teachers, and friends. Through a
combination of good communication and reputation earned through association. That implies some work on the part of the consumer, who must evaluate his
merchant or advisor or seek others who have evaluated him/her. And that work is often done, willingly, by patrons of health food stores who are truly
interested in health.

We are lucky to live in a country where creative entrepreneurs can offer healing advice. This is a time in history when good alternative information is easy to find. Books are available about natural treatment of almost all common ailments. And because of the internet, you have access to a way to distribute your own health book. Such opportunities are part of a healthy society, a society where patrons of health food stores can and do take some credit for their own healing.

International Shipping Of Food Products

International shipping of food products can be as simple as running a refrigerated truck from the United States into Canada or as complicated as getting expensive luxuries such as caviar or French wine shipped overseas. There are a number of factors to take into account when food is involved in the international shipping process. Temperature controls, safety features and regulations in the destination country are just a few of them.

Most international shipping companies prefer not to deal with any shipment that involves food of any kind. There are, however, international shipping companies that specialize in the packaging and moving of food products either over land or across the sea. These specialists are equipped with refrigerated shipping containers and have the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure that your food arrives safe and still edible.

Trucks and railroad cars move food regularly when international shipping is from one country to another on the same continent. The United States, Canada and Mexico have an agreement known as NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Act, which enables companies on both sides of the border to transport grain, produce, and processed foods without the burden of heavy taxes and regulations. There are inspectors at each border and trucks are subject to search but these three countries are dependent on each other for many different types of food products and the respective governments encourage international shipping.

In Europe, the formation of the European Union and introduction of a uniform currency, the Euro, has made international shipping an easier process. The countries formerly located in the Soviet Block known as Eastern Europe rely on international shipping of food from Western Europe in their rebuilding process. Trucks and trains travel across the continent frequently and the shipping ports are kept busy with food transports loading and unloading.

In order to ship overseas, food products need to be packaged and refrigerated to prevent spoiling. Certain items, known as non-perishable food products, can be canned and sent in a regular container but outside temperature factors must be taken under consideration. A ship may go through tropical or arctic conditions during a voyage and even canned goods can spoil or burst if not protected properly. Imported beer is one of the products that is canned and fairly durable but still may sour if exposed to temperature changes in the atmosphere during a voyage. Beer is usually kept at a constant temperature during international shipping.

Some food products are perishable and need to be shipped by air. This type of international shipping is the most expensive and involves careful packaging and shipping directly to a restaurant or food preparation facility where perishable foods can be immediately prepared for consumption or refrigerated immediately. A good example of this is the shipment of rare shellfish from the Far East to the coast of California. Many restaurants in the San Francisco area particularly will advertise flown in daily on special dishes that are hard to find and typically very pricy due to the air freight charges.

What You Need To Know About Food Acidity

Our nutrition is the most importact influence on our body's acidity, and therefore it is essential to understand food acidity when we aim to live by a healthy acid alkaline balance. As we all know, famoous celebrities, such as Tony and Sage Robbins, Kirsten Dunst and Robert Young swear by an alkaline diet.

If you're interested in leading an alkaline lifestyle, you want to keep your body mainly in the alkaline zone. A quick review: Chemically, the pH Level is measured on a pH scale ranging from 0-14, with 7 being neutral, less than 7 acidic and more than 7 alkaline. .

Research and experience have shown that our bodies function more efficiently when in an alkaline state. The metabolism is improved, cells live longer, our internal organs work more effectively, we feel more energised and most people also lose weight.

How Our Bodies Neutralise Acidic Foods

When we consume acidic foods, the body will try and neutralize the acids, so that it can return to its most efficient state (the alkaline state). This neutralising of acids is also often described as "detoxing". Generally the body can neutralise acids through our organs (such as liver and kidneys) or through deep breathing. Any acids that cannot be neutralised are stored in the tissues of the body. During a detox, you would reduce the amount of acids you put into your body, therefore the body has the capacity to neutralise the acids that have been stored in the body tissue. This can be a difficult process, as many people get withdrawal symptoms (from sugar, alcohol, nicotine, etc) and at the same time experience the toxins that are being neutralised in the body (these may be expressed through head aches, mood swings, etc).

Food Acidity And Acidic Foods

Firstly we need to differentiate between foods that are acidic, and foods that have an acidic effect on our bodies. These are two different aspects, as some foods themselves are considered acidic, but when consumed they have an alkalising effect on the body. For example, lemons and limes are acidic, but when consumed, they help to alkalise the body.

Measuring Food Acidity

The degree of food acidity is measured by determining its pH value or analyzing its mineral content. The lower a pH value is the more acidic is the food. Acidic minerals include sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, flouride, iodine and silicon. When a food contains more acidic than alkaline minerals it is said to be acidic. If you want to know the acidity or alkalinity of a certain food, the easiest way is to get an alkaline foods chart to guide your way.

This is a basic summary on food acidity. If you are interested in improving your body's alkalinity or following an acid alkaline balance diet, there are some easy and fast ways to include more alkaline foods in your diet. Find out more at http://www.alkalinefoodsblog.com

Long Term Food Storage Basics

Many people do not realize they can store food long-term and if done properly can save them money by storing food for their families. Knowing how and what to store are often the basic questions that need answering to fully understand long-term food storage.

What is Long Term Food Storage?

Long-term food storage can be thought of as an emergency supply of food in the event of a natural catastrophe or in times when work is slow and money is tight. In the early days of
American history, most people were farmers, and they used the food from the farms to store so they would have an adequate food supply in the winter months. They canned and stored properly so that their families had enough food to survive the winters. This was common practice at the time but as America advanced and only certain families and corporations were involved in farming, people stopped long-term storage of foods.

Benefits of Having Stored Food

Today, people can simply go to their supermarket anytime of day or night and purchase their food supply for the week. However, in the event of a power failure, how much food would these people truly have in order to survive a long power-outage or if they had no access to a supermarket?

In addition, by storing foods long-term, it allows a family to purchase many food items in bulk, which of course is cheaper than buying in smaller quantities. Many people think that long-term food storage means the food will be stale and will not taste as good as if it were just purchased. However, storing properly and in the correct containers, keeps the food fresh and no one would be able to tell by tasting if the food had been stored for a longer period.

Large families particularly benefit from long term storage of food because they consume more food, purchasing in bulk when items are on sale saves the family a great deal of money.

What is the Best Food to Store?

Food such as white rice, corn, wheat, and many other grains if stored properly can last up to 30 years. Additionally, dry milk, sugar, salt, cooking oils, and baking soda are all excellent items to store long-term and could all be used to survive for many months or years depending on the amount stored.

Storage containers need to be air tights bottles or jars that have airtight fitting lids and airtight cans that absorb oxygen are also recommended. Cans and jars all need to have sealers in order to keep out air, so that the food can be stored for years unharmed and remain fresh.

Final Thoughts

While many American no long work on farms and have gotten away from the basics of long-term food storage, it truly is something that everyone should engage in. Think of your family and your current food supply, if you could not purchase items from a supermarket for six months, would you have enough food to feed your family for that period. Storing food is a great way to prepare for emergencies, since no one can predict the future, you can determine how much food you have stored.

Paleo Diet Food List - What Everybody Ought to Know About Online Paleo Diet Food List!

You need be careful when searching for Paleo diet food list that are readily available on the internet. I've came across many lists that are so inaccurate it seems odd they were allowed to be published online.

Okay I understand, inaccuracies and false information are normal on the internet, but as an avid follower of the Paleo diet, I find this issue unacceptable!

Not just food list mind you, even many Paleo recipes online are inaccurate! Later I'll show you how to obtain loads of precise Paleolithic recipes that are delicious and compiled in a very accessible format.

See, I've been on this incredible diet for almost a year. It has benefited me in so many ways, therefore I want folks who are new to this diet, attain the same benefits as I have.

And this is not easily achievable if one were to obtain a Paleo diet food list that is erroneous and full of inconsistencies.

You know, I already found at least 5 lists of Paleo diet menu (I won't name the websites here) and each one listed green beans, sweet corn and yams as Paleolithic foods! How wrong-

If they really wanted to include the aforementioned foods in their lists, at least put them under the non-Paleo friendly category and indicate as foods that can be added depending on one's strictness.

Look, a precise Paleo diet food list should note the following foods as not 100% Paleo friendly.

Vegetables and fruits - Sweet potato, raisins, chestnuts, beetroot, pickles, peas and of course green beans!

Meats - Ham and also bacon.

Earlier I mentioned about obtaining a full collection of tasty Paleo recipes. Just follow the link below to download complete Paleo cookbooks. These cookbooks also include accurate Paleo diet food list. Click this link to download: http://www.paleorecipecookbooks.info/
