Dog Nutrition Reading Pet Food Lables
Reading and understanding dog food labels can be very difficult sometimes. There are a number of things to consider when buying dog food: age, health etc. Many varieties exist of both wet and dry pet foods. There are also snacks that have labels that are difficult to read.
The FDA states that dog food labels have to list the minimum amounts of protein,and fat; also, the maximum amounts of moisture and crude fiber. There are other manufacturers that do list other ingredients as well. Dog food labels do not usually state the minimum percentages of calcium, sodium, phosphorus or linoleic acid. Cat food labels normally list taurine and magnesium, two necessary nutrients for cats.
The amount of moisture in pet foods is different in all foods. Dry food does have the least amount and canned food has the most. Make sure when comparing food, compare canned food with canned food and dry food with other dry food.
There are three basic rules to pet food labels:
1- The 95% rule: If a product has a name like 'Beef for Dogs' it has to have at least 95% of that product that is names. With these, it is the beef and tuna and does not include any added water.
2- The 25% rule: If there is a qualifying word in the label, such as 'Dinner", 'Entree' 'Platter' or 'Formula' there has to be at least 25% of the ingredient named on the label. A good example is "Shrimp Dinner".
3- The 3% rule: If the label has the word 'with' it only has to have 3% of that product named.
'Chicken Dog Food'- 95% rule applied 'Dog Food with Tuna'- 3% rule applied
It is also important to look at the entire list of ingredients in pet foods. These will be listed in descending order. The first ingredient must be the highest quality, such as meat. Be careful when buying pet food which contains 'animal by-products' as they will not give any nutrition to any age of dog.
It is best to choose food that is appropriate for your pet's life stage. Some foods are just for 'puppies' or 'seniors'. these are formulated for a pet of a certain age and stage of their life. Food for adults is not appropriate for a puppy that is growing. If a food label states "100% nutritionally complete" then the food is good for all ages.

Childhood Obesity is a major factor contributing to the poor health of many children in Western society. Rates of severe childhood obesity have been seen to triple in the last quarter of a century, this puts many children at risk when it comes to both diabetes and heart disease either in their youth or leading to these conditions in later life.
Children eat even more when they are bored. It is very easy for them to be watching television or perhaps reading a book, whilst at the same time chewing on doughnuts or other "danger" foods. Many boys are apt to sit playing computer games and at the same time eat - thereby compounding the situation; they are getting little exercise in front of their computer screen and at the same time filling up on carbs!
Parents can often fall into the trap of rewarding their children with food. A trip to the diner or other fastfood outlet can all to easily become the norm for the child who has completed something well. A friend of mine pleases her young son by taking him to the aquarium, though the trip to the fire station really hit all the right notes with her son! There are many other ways of rewarding children for their efforts - maybe a trip to a game, a new t-shirt or maybe some "can't do without" fashion accessory. Steer your children away from the food reward - think outside the lunch box!
Children who are overweight are just storing up health problems for the future. Looking after your kids health now is going to pay dividends in the future. Any child who is overweight has up to an 80% chance of being overweight in later life
Your kids health need not be your only concern if you have a family. By getting the whole family on board with a healthy eating programme everybody benefits. The rest of the family get to eat healthily, and the kids do too. Then they do not feel like they are being singled out or punished. What could be worse than sitting at the dining table facing a pile of salad while the rest of the family chow down on pizza and fries?
But do not try to make any changes in diet too quickly. You will have much less resistance if you make the changeover gradually. My sister found this with her young son. By slowly increasing the "good" foods on his plate and replacing the "bad" foods, he hardly noticed the change. Also he did not suffer any withdrawal symptoms either perceived or otherwise.
Above all encourage your child - use the carrot (literally) not the stick. Get them to choose the healthy option when shopping at the supermarket. Involve them in preparing some meals - any kid who has spent time and energy producing something for the table is sure to want to impress dad - and he will show dad just how good it is by eating lots of it!

If you are not happy with it, inquire as to the school policy on pupils taking packed lunches. Packed lunches give you much more control over what your child eats. One third of world's food is wasted, says UN study
About one third of all food produced for human consumption goes to waste, according to a study commissioned by the United Nations food agency.
That amounts to more than one billion tonnes of waste around the world every year.
The study recommends that developing countries should improve production and distribution, so as to stop losing so much food.
It also says industrialised countries must stop throwing so much away.
Loss versus waste
The UN study, by the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology, was aimed at an international trade fair for the food packaging industry, to be held in Germany later this month.
Among the key findings are that consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food, 222 million tonnes, as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa.
Unsurprisingly, the researchers found that fruit and vegetables - including roots and tubers - go to waste more than other types of food.
But the report, entitled Global Food Losses and Food Waste, has a different analysis of the problem for different types of economy.
Commissioned by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), it distinguishes between food loss and food waste.
Losses happen during the production, processing and distribution of food. They affect developing countries worst. The answer is to improve technology and infrastructure, the study says.
Food waste is the big issue in industrialised countries. It is mainly due to retailers and consumers throwing perfectly edible food into the bin.
Waste amounts to around 100kg (more than 200lb) per consumer in Europe and North America every year.
Consumers in sub-Saharan Africa and most of Asia each throw away just 6-11kg.

Sometimes it seems like cooking is just too difficult to do on a daily basis, but food processors take a lot of the hassle out. If you dont have a food processor, I highly recommend that you get one. In fact, go out and buy one right now! I use my food processor everyday, keeping it on my kitchen counter for fast use. Why? Because I have so many great recipes! Here is my top 10 favorite food processor recipes guaranteed to make you love your food processor.
1. You can make your own peanut butter or any other nut butter that you like in your processor. Cashews make wonderful nut butter too.
2. Speaking of peanut butter, peanut butter cookies are the easiest recipe in the world: 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 cup peanut butter, and a teaspoon of vanilla if desired. Toss them into your processor; give it a whirl for a few seconds until well mixed. Scoop out a tablespoon of dough and scrap it on the side of the bowl to even the spoon, drop onto a cookie sheet and smash it down with a fork to make the cross hatch design. Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 9 minutes and you have fabulous, gluten free peanut butter cookies.
3. Make steak sandwiches by chilling, but not freezing, leftover steak in the freezer until firm but not frozen. Slice with your processor and then add to a skillet in which you have been sauting bell peppers and onions. Put it all on a sandwich bun, top with jack cheese, and enjoy. 5. For fresh lemon sherbet, mix equal amounts sugar, milk, and half-and-half with freshly grated lemon rind and some lemon juice.
